Blogging Month Day 26: Little Victories, Literacy, Late Risers and Learned Squid

Filed under: Animals, News Articles, Words/Language — liberrydwarf @ 10:25 pm

Big family evening, speedy post before a nice warm bed with a nice warm cat 🙂

1) One Good Thing: Little victories: our OPAC broke down on Friday afternoon and we got an early mark. I got invited to write another review. Oh, and Thursday’s Honey Cookies were fantastic, total smash hit!

2) One Bad Thing: This isn’t really a today thing, it’s been a few things across the last couple of days that go together and have ticked me off. I have a strange-ish surname – Creese. It might be prone to mis-spelling, if one didn’t have it written down in front of them. I have this week suffered not one, but two, bad misspellings, and on reasonably important/official things too. And it’s not like I was dictating over the phone: in both cases these people had my surname written out in front of them (in one case on a driver’s license, for pity’s sake) and still got them wrong. So according to my first published review article, I’m a Crease. Even worse, according to my annual theme park pass, I’m a Cheese. Is it really that hard, honestly people?

3) One Thing I Learned: that I can get from bed to car on a work morning in 5 minutes if need be! My alarm didn’t go off on the morning of my early shift, and I awoke with 5 minutes before I needed to be out the door and on the road, and I made it – clothes on the right way around, medications taken, hair brushed. And I even managed to break a pair of shoes and have to switch to another one in that time too! (Of course, now my argument to hubby that yes, it does take an hour for me to get ready to go out to dinner, isn’t really going to work is it?)

4) Today’s link: and the World Cup is officially so all-pervasive now that even psychic octopuses are getting in on it

Blogging Month Day 18: Magnus, Masterchef, Monarchs and Musical Instruments

Filed under: Humor, music, News Articles, Politics, TV — liberrydwarf @ 11:18 am

1) One Good Thing: I lent a colleague my Sanctuary season 1 DVDs. As you might remember from previous posts, I’m reasonably reluctant to lend and recommend in case people don’t like it. And Sanctuary does run the risk of being disliked intensely (as much as it does being liked intensely). But he enjoyed the exploits of Dr Helen Magnus and friends, we had a great chat about it, and have promises of much DVD exchanging in the coming months. Hooray!

2) One Bad Thing: disappointed in last night’s MasterChef elimination. Matthew was one of my favourites. And poor Callum was so distressed – as my sister put it “the bromance is dead!” Lesson – don’t try to be clever! At least he now gets to play cheffies and work for Neil Perry (who, to my Dragonlance-obsessed brain, is probably a kender in disguise. That topknot!)

3) One Thing I Learned: that apparently, the Queen of Australia is Queen Isabel, her husband’s name is King Harry, she has three servants and she’s not as good as the King of the Universe. Asking six-year-olds questions is fun 🙂

4) Today’s Link: special breaking “news” from South Africa from the Onion

Blogging Month Day 2: Feet, Firefox, Foreclosures and Feral Teens

Filed under: Australia, Fashion, I.T, Just Plain Weird, News Articles, YouTube — liberrydwarf @ 12:02 pm

Well, I made it back for Day 2 (thought that was going to be the hard part! Though I guess just wait til the weekend!). The day is young, and I only got home from work at 9pm last night so not a whole lot’s happened, but let’s see if we can’t knock a daily rundown together…

1) One good thing: I have awesome socks today. They are making me EXTREMELY happy!

You can't see from here, but there are little ribbons at the back too 🙂

2) One bad thing: Posting the previous photo of socks? Took the better part of 30 minutes to do. It also took me an hour to upload 7 photos of my brother’s band from the weekend on Flickr. WHY won’t people write Firefox-compliant code?!

3) One thing I have learned: that the Sydney Opera House might have to close. That would be so awful! Why can the Government apparently afford to guarantee bank loans but not to save what’s probably the #1 identifiable tourist icon of the country?

4) Today’s link: (although technically there are two above… oh you want a proper link…. okay…) One word: America. Actually, two words: Bloody America. And Bloody Twilight. So that’s four. Ah, just watch the stupid clip already…

“I remixed a remix, it was back to normal…”

Filed under: Books, Librarian, News Articles, YouTube — liberrydwarf @ 4:32 pm

Well, turns out that the boss did get turned around due to volcano ash as I hypothesized last week, so thankfully things can go back to normal tomorrow. (And yes I say tomorrow, Saturday, since poor little yours truly drew the short straw and has to sit bored silly on her ass all day answering the same Journalism essay questions 50 times. And campus pizza isn’t even open. Fail.)

Anyway, here’s the fun I got up to this week since I could delegate crappy jobs to others and since none of my friends were talking to me while I was the boss…

1) Unless you want people to think you’re a cannibal, PROOFREAD PROPERLY! (Reminiscent of the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror – “there’s still MORE space dust on this book…”)

2) And everyone says we librarians have no sense of humour… oh wait. (Actually, long time readers know I’m a great fan of the passive aggressive note in whatever situation, not necessarily just libraries. Just sort of has a nice poetic sense to it there…)

3) Finally YouTube: and while I can’t make my mind up whether Glee is grin-inducing awesome or yawn-inducing boring (seems to change week to week!) I do love a well-done mashup. And this one? Winner – works very very well!

“Over-excitement and boredom are states of mind which I equally shun.”

Hello pretty readers! Hope you’ve all been as super-busy as I have! Need I remind you it’s CHRISTMAS IN SIX WEEKS!!!!

*runs around screaming and waving hands…*

Now that we’ve all calmed down, back to business… linkety linkey business! 🙂

1) I’m of the opinion that The Daily Squee needs no introduction. At least, one from me could never do it any justice… in a word, *squee!!!* indeed. Bring spare clothing in case you asplode from cute…

2) Nobody could ever say Australians, and young Australians at that, were ever anything but cool….

3) Finally, Youtube – this week in honour of my fellow altos in community choir as we prep for our big recital Saturday. Don’t worry girls – we’ll rock them!

“There is nothing like a challenge to bring out the best in man.”

Filed under: Books, News Articles, YouTube — liberrydwarf @ 11:11 am

Hello!  (Was going to say HAIFRAND after having been set the ridiculous challenge of saying HAIFRAND to at least three people a day for the whole week, but quickly worked out that it’s a stupid word and a stupid challenge anyway… grumble…)

Non stupid links time!

1) We can all go buy “The Lost Symbol” by Dan Brown now, lucky us eh? Just in case you’re wondering what could be in it – or what he might be putting in the next one – try your hand at the Interactive Dan Brown Plot Generator – guaranteed bestseller blurb! (Hey, if you look it up on maybe user “danbrown” has it tagged as “next_book”…)

2) News about J.R.R Tolkein that’s just come to light – in case you didn’t think he was awesome enough already!

3) Youtube – this week, see what cats REALLY do with catnip… (which, by the way, I am SO going out and buying and planting in my yard…)

“Some people say that cats are sneaky, evil, and cruel. True, and they have many other fine qualities as well.”

Filed under: Animals, Food, News Articles, Words/Language, YouTube — liberrydwarf @ 8:12 am

Hello everyone! Happy birthday, Your Majesty Queen Elizabeth II! (Yes, we know, not your actual birthday, but thanks for the long weekend all the same!)

Want to know how I spent my 3 days of freedom?

Chasing cats. No metaphor here. Literally, I got given my mother’s two cats, lost them, roamed the neighbourhood handing out fliers and hunting for them, lured them back with food, lost them again, repeated previous two steps, etc… oh yeah, and earned a nasty bite for a failed attempt at claw clipping.

Cats suck. Other people’s cats suck. Even mine (who’s been sulking under the bed for the last 3 days, and will probably continue to do so for most of the next 3 weeks) sucks.

Welcome to a week without cat links…

1) Picture this: you love a particular someone in your life very much. More than can be adequately verbally expressed – what words could you possible find to say just how much you love that someone? Never fear – let social internet experimentation do the work for you. I Love You More Than Blank not only lets you tell the world how much you love someone, but also lends you someone else’s ideas for declaring your passion. So, whether you love your significant other more than fruit parfait (or slightly more creepily, more than your mum…) this is the site for you. Unless you mention Edward or Bella anywhere, in which case go back to your corner and sit there alone…

2) In the current economic and environmental crisis, it’s good to see that Britain’s still battling on tackling the questions we all really needed answers to… like this one…

3) I’m told that ABSOLUTELY everyone has already seen this, but anything from YouTube which makes me shriek with laughter for almost 10 minutes straight is totally worth blogging anyway. If you haven’t seen this clip before, be patient – and maybe don’t watch if you’ve got a heart condition and can’t take sudden shocks. Or are at risk of dying from cute.

Better than cats. A million times so.

“Damn your principles! Stick to your party!”

Filed under: Celebrities, Just Plain Weird, Kittens, music, News Articles, YouTube — liberrydwarf @ 11:20 am

Hi friends! Another start of semester gone, another thousand-odd freshers I’ve bored to tears, another plaintive cry of “is it Easter yet?” By the way, are costume parties a fun idea, or a terrible idea? I posed the idea of a costume birthday party later this month with my friends – unanimously the answer was “if you do that, we won’t come.” People suck! Oh well, in a few years I’ll be thirty – significant birthday – and it’s my understanding that people will do anything you ask them to at a party for a significant birthday. If only because then they get to tease you for being old. Haha, now thirty is something to look forward to!

Mindless rant over: play nice with this week’s links…

1) This musical delight could be either really awesome, or really really dreadful: there ain’t gonna be no middle ground here…

2) Mindless fun for cat-lovers and masochists alike (though some might say that there’s no distinction, all cat-lovers are masochists). Get the cats to do what you want them to. Now get them to keep doing it… except for the 4am whining and the shameless self-cleansing, they’ve got cat behaviour down pretty good!

3) The second I saw this, the first thing I thought was “hey, does anyone in the greater Brisbane area want to get together and try this?” (second was “I wonder if that food-court girl got fired for doing that?”) Anyways, staged or not, it’s wonderful, if only for the faces of the food-court patrons…

“I have noticed that the people who are late are often so much jollier than the people who have to wait for them.”

Filed under: Alcohol, I.T, Just Plain Weird, News Articles, Science, YouTube — liberrydwarf @ 8:13 am

Oops, sorry, I’m late posting again! It’s been a hectic week- what with the special iPod project and rushing to finish season 4 of Stargate Atlantis, I (shamefully) let your serve of links for this week slide. Bad liberrydwarf!

So here they are, with a big side serve of apologies. We’ll spray them with water to make them look fresh, like McDonalds garden salad…

1) I love this story. All news stories should be like this. All science should be like this (though I don’t know that Time Magazine counts as science…) This is the answer to all my prayers! Sucks to be you, exercise bike, hand me that paperback!

2) Still in the world of science, sort of… this week I did something I haven’t done since I was 19 or so (not ages and ages ago, mind you,  but still a few years) and stayed out all night. Left at 6pm, got home at 6am. And while it was awesome (and I didn’t drink, I drove) I do think that maybe my task performance wasn’t great after a big night out. Probably would have been worse if I had been drinking. And that sort of thing could  really ruin my life… fortunately, Auntie Google will save me!

3) Finally, YoutTube this week comes from a colleague at work. We’re doing this “learn new web stuff” course, part of which is YouTube, and we’ve got an unofficial challenge going on to find the weirdest thing on there to share with the class. I don’t know if this would get my pick for weirdest, but it is a little crazy. All I can say is it’s great to be a fan, and the groom in question can’t argue he didn’t know what he was getting himself into three years from now…
