“Bad weather always looks worse through a window.”

Brr… hello everyone! It’s cold and rainy and miserable, and I have hot chocolate and blogging, what could be better? (Yes, I know Australians don’t really have the right to whine about cold weather. Queenslanders in particular, but any excuse for hot chocolate and not having to go outside!) Here are some winter-warming links I’ve found to share while I’ve been rugged up inside…

1) I’m gearing up for my UK trip (only 5 months to go now! Heehee!) and looking around for where-to-go inspiration. Having never been to Stratford-Upon-Avon, if I want to have any claim to being a worth-my-salt librarian I thought I probably better go. Especially since, Shakespeare’s obviously pretty hot property if this BBC article is anything to go by. That, and thieves are stupid and librarians are awesome. Why does nothing like this ever happen to me??

2) I’ve been in two minds as to whether or not to include this one – it intrigued me and made me laugh, but it’s pretty creepy. Mostly because I think they’re 100% dead-set serious, and I shouldn’t be laughing and am going to hell. But what are we here if not controversial? (Lazy. Yes, that answer’s correct too, I guess. Be quiet!) So here you go – Suicide Food. I can’t sum it up better than they can, so here:

“What is Suicide Food? Suicide Food is any depiction of animals that act as though they wish to be consumed. Suicide Food actively participates in or celebrates its own demise. Suicide Food identifies with the oppressor. Suicide Food is a bellwether of our decadent society. Suicide Food says, “Hey! Come on! Eating meat is without any ethical ramifications! See, Mr. Greenjeans? The animals aren’t complaining! So what’s your problem?” Suicide Food is not funny.”

I beg to differ with the last…. my smoked chicken sandwich and I both…

3) Finally, via YouTube this week, more fun with food – and with the 80’s! A lot of people my age consider being born in the 80’s some sort of trophy, something to celebrate. Not this little liberrian. The 80’s were trashy, over-the-top, embarrassing and down-right crass. But hey, at least they got enough fibre…

“Those who never retract their opinions love themselves more than they love the truth.”

Well, having just finished off the first season of Jonathan Rhys Meyers’ “The Tudors”, I take back everything I said about “The Other Boleyn Girl” being porn the other week – this taketh the jackpot! This baby needed three discs just to fit all the porn-y-ness in! On the upside, JRM does make an excellent petulant monarch (and if my friends are anything to go by, who wouldn’t want to screw him six ways to Sunday anyway??) And there’s a lot more there for Tudor lovers than there was in TOBG (and lots of awesome hats and man candy). Thumbs up!

Now, back to the web…

1) Live and direct from the UK (cannot BELIEVE I am visiting this sick sick country) it’s The Man Who Has Sex With Cars. ‘Nuff said. Even as an Australian (we have a racial sick love for bad cars) I cannot possibly identify…

2) Do you love science fiction? Old science fiction? In particular, the crazy world of flying cars, teleporters and promiscuous sex-bots they promise in the mythical faraway year 2000?? Then Modern Mechanix is the blog for you – and it’s all true, baby!

3) AniBoom is kind of YouTube for cartoonists and animators. There’s some weird, weird stuff there. I warn you now. This, however, is pretty cute, and very true… (you’ll have to click the image below to go there – they haven’t discovered fire or embedding yet…)

“It’s nice to know that what you’re doing is being read and enjoyed by a good deal of people.” (or at least a couple, and neither of them’s your Mum)

It’s nice to be read. Blog stats, as I believe I’ve said before, are super-cool fun (teehee! Kitten Burger!) but pingbacks make my day. *sigh* It’s nice not to feel futile. Makes a nice change from the day-job!

Anyway, time to earn that absolute wave of blogosphere respect…

1) A continuation of last week’s literary theme (thanks for this link go to Kalafudra as I found it on her blog): you thought the weird titles of last week were a hoot? Take a look at the Literary Review’s Bad Sex in Fiction Awards, of which the late great Norman Mailer was the latest recipient. I was going to find you a snippet to stick here as a teaser, but quite frankly I couldn’t find much that wouldn’t get me fired or make me vomit inside my mouth, so you’ll just have to look for yourself – now there’s incentive!

Read the shortlisted passages. Out loud. To your significant other. If nothing else, roll-on-the-floor snot-dripping laughter will guaranteed bring you closer together…

2) I saw a Warhol exhibit on the weekend, so naturally I was going to try and find a Warhol-izer for you to play around with. I go searching, and what do I find? The time-waster MOTHERLODE, I tells ya! I present for your enjoyment The Generator Blog – not just one new toy to play with, but a new one pretty much every couple of days. Find your Harry Potter Name. Make and download your own mobile/cell phone wallpaper. Translate your name into Tibetan character. Oh, and when you resurface 3 years later, drop me a thankyou note, yeah?

3) Finally, out of a random mix of nostalgia and copyright nautiness (plus someone was singing the theme song when I was out the other night and it’s stuck in my head): here’s Disney’s sweetest ever cartoon: Lambert the Sheepish Lion. If you can prove the theme song did NOT get stuck in your head, I will publish a LTSL Hall of Fame next week and you will be on the list!
