Back into Blogging

Filed under: Memes — liberrydwarf @ 7:59 pm

I’ve been making resolutions left-right-and-centre over the last couple of weeks. One of them is to blog again.

Another is to start thinking like a professional librarian again, so for library people, I’m starting a weekly journal article review blog over at Rock Chick Librarian – the Thinking Librarian’s Blog. Come have a look!

To jump back into this blog, a SuperMeme!

1. Name one person who made you laugh last night?

My little scouts, as they did ten-pin-bowling with oranges.

2. What were you doing at 0800?

Probably doing breakfast for either me or the little man.

3. What were you doing 30 minutes ago?

Having a bath (sadly, not involving bubbles and wine and being alone. Mostly involving cleaning chicken and vegetable puree off myself and the little man.)

4. What happened to you in 2006?

Got my first proper librarian job and driver’s license.

5. What was the last thing you said out loud?

“Good Dog” (upon feeding our labbie some dinner)

6. How many beverages did you have today?

Coffee in the morning, and 2 bottles of water.

7. What color is your hairbrush?

Black. All three hairbrushes I own are black (aren’t most?)

8. What was the last thing you paid for?

A cup-a-noodle, Kit Kat Dark and bottled water. $7.50 all up. Disgusting.

9. Where were you last night?

Scouts, then dropped my mother off at the bus-stop, then home

10. What color is your front door?

Brown.

11. Where do you keep your change?

In my purse, and in a big Corinthian Wafers tin for (supposedly) saving it up.

12. What’s the weather like today?

It was nice. Little man was in a onesie with no socks most of the day because it was super-warm. Dried 2 loads of washing.

13. What’s the best ice-cream flavor?

I’m more of a sorbet girl. But chocolate, if pressed.

14. What excites you?

A surprise present. Or more accurately, the leadup before I get it. I’m shallow.

15. Do you want to cut your hair?

Just did, a couple of weeks ago. Short hair = less for little guy to grab…

16. Are you over the age of 25?

Yes. And getting further over it every day… 😦

17. Do you talk a lot?

Inanely far too much. And mostly to people/creatures who aren’t about to talk back anytime soon.

18. Do you watch the O.C.?

I have never watched the OC. Not even once. It remains one of the things I’m proud of never watching. Said list includes Jersey Shore, the new 90210, and any of the Twilight films.

19. Do you know anyone named Steven?

My sister-in-law is dating a Steven, and my husband has an uncle named Steven. This being Australia, they are both just “Steve”.

20. Do you make up your own words?

Not really. Not in English, anyway. If I don’t know a Latin word for something when we’re speaking Latin at home, I’ll make it up.

21. Are you a jealous person?

Insanely. And over little things just as much as big things. I’m super-petty like that.

22. Name a friend whose name starts with the letter ‘A’.

Alison, from Mothers Group, Eleanor’s mummy.

23. Name a friend whose name starts with the letter ‘K’.

Harder… my brother’s girlfriend Kath?

24. Who’s the first person on your received call list?

My Mum.

25. What does the last text message you received say?

“Haha. Lets [sic] hope. Luvya!” From my Dad, as I was saying I hoped I could get a Blu-Ray player with my tax return.

26. Do you chew on your straw?

No.

27. Do you have curly hair?

If I air-dry it without brushing, yes. If I attempt any taming at all, it’s just frizzy.

28. Where’s the next place you’re going to?

Work tomorrow :(. Via my husband’s work to drop him off, since he’s going away for the weekend.

29. Who’s the rudest person in your life?

If rude = crude, then it’s a hard-fought contest between every member of my family. My sister might win on sheer showiness of crudeness.

30. What was the last thing you ate?

Chicken and vegetable soup (mercifully unpureed)

31. Will you get married in the future?

That’s a tricky one. I’m married now, and I’m very strongly against the thought of divorce (guess I don’t want to become my parents!) So I think it’d take something pretty serious to have me leave my husband, or he’d have to die. If it was the former, I’m not sure. The latter, I think so. Unless I was really really old…

32. What’s the best movie you’ve seen in the past 2 weeks?

The only movie I’ve seen in the past 2 weeks is “Red Dog”, but I highly recommend that one!

33. Is there anyone you like right now?

My husband, my baby, and once I get the ironing done, myself 🙂

34. When was the last time you did the dishes?

Um, is “constantly” an answer? Bottles, food trays – not to mention little man needs 3 spoons to eat dinner (one in each hand and one for me to feed him). I would just about commit a capital crime for a dishwasher…

35. Are you currently depressed?

I don’t think so. A couple of months ago, yes. But not now, in a good place and life is sorting itself out. I think I’m just tired…

36. Did you cry today?

No. But I did yesterday, when I saw “Red Dog”. Stupid tear-jerker animal movies…

37. Why did you answer and post this?

Because I felt like I badly needed to make a big effort in returning to blogging.

Meme Monday – 5 quick questions

Filed under: Memes — liberrydwarf @ 10:02 am

Grabbing some time for a quick meme!

1.  Favorite flower?

I love Singapore Orchids – I wore them in my hair at my wedding and someone gave me one when my son was born, so they’re very special for me.

2.  Last time you ate chocolate?

Finished the last of my Easter chocolate on Sunday 😦

3.  Mood right now?

Content – sitting in the warm sun, Haydn string quartet music in the background, sleepy baby on my lap…

4.  What hurts?

My nasal passages – I’ve got a cold, and high BP means no decongestants so I’m on my own…

5.  Word for today?

Soporific. I really hope sleepy baby becomes dead-to-the-world-for-hours baby, as I’m ripe for a nap myself!

Meme Monday – Book Meme

Filed under: Books, Memes — liberrydwarf @ 2:12 pm

[taken from here]

1. What new book coming out soon do you plan to buy?

I almost never buy books new…I do know we’ll be getting the next Harry Dresden the second it comes out though. (Warning: spoilers for previous book in link!)

2. What upcoming book are you dying to read?

A Dance with Dragons. Like every other Game of Thrones fan. (At least, still holding on to hope and assuming it’s still upcoming…)

3. What series is a must read for you?

The Dresden Files. Discworld. Also, sadly, the Stephanie Plum books too…

4. What new author have you found so far in 2011?

New-new, or new to me? New to me = Many. None mind-blowing, from memory. I never know who’s new-new, but I haven’t been impressed with any first-timers I’ve come across yet. ‘Oldies But Goldies’ have done the trick for me this year…

5. What little known author are you a fan of?

I’m probably way-off about who’s little-known and who’s not. I don’t suppose Markus Zusak is particularly well-know outside Australia, but I thought The Book Thief was masterful…

Meme Monday: What TV shows do you currently watch?

Filed under: Memes, TV — liberrydwarf @ 4:26 pm

(Taken from Kalafudra, as usual. But limiting my answers to one of each…)

Older Shows That I’m Finally Getting Around to Watching

Mysterious Cities of Gold. My husband used to watch this as a kid and they recently brought out a DVD box set. It’s… well it’s dated, and more than a bit racist, and the dubbing is really bad. Plus they have these weird “educational” segments at the end of each episode. Usually we sit and MST3K-style heckle, then feel bad…

Guilty Pleasure Shows

The Amazing Race – I know it’s tacky and trite. And I know Americans are awful, particularly when they’re overseas. And I know their team stereotypes are horribly offensive, and that lots of the high interpersonal drama is totally scripted. I know it probably should have run its course ages ago (although it’s nothing compared to Survivor on that count). I don’t know, maybe it’s Phil. But I just can’t look away, every single season.

Shows That Are Really, Really Awesome

Ooh, controversial – should be “shows that I think are really really awesome that others might not agree with”, really. Deadwood probably tops my list here…

Shows That I Continue to Watch Though I Don’t Really Know Why

Glee – I thought most of the first half of Season One was funny, fresh and bold. Most of the second half of Season One was week-on-week-off hit and miss. Season Two seems to be mostly “tired old stuff we’ve done before with the occasional new joke”. I used to laugh out loud at Season One, now I can go a whole episode without cracking a smile. Sad. (Maybe you should bring back Neil Patrick Harris, Glee. That might just cure everything…)

Everything Else you’re watching now

Surprisingly, not much else at all. Nothing regularly. If something like The Simpsons or Big Bang Theory is on and I’m channel surfing I’ll stop to watch the whole episode, but we tend to do our serious TV watching from DVD, and do one series at a time.

Current Shows That I’ve Been Meaning to Start Watching

Dexter. Though I have promised myself I’ll read the Book 1-3 omnibus I have first.

Currently On Break, But Awaited

Waiting for True Blood season 3 on DVD. Yes, I know I could download it. But I won’t… I’m a good responsible copyright-considerate librarian…

Looking Forward To

To quote Kalafudra verbatim – “Game of Thrones. Of course.” Enough said. (And this one I will be trying to watch online weekly. Because morally I can cope with that better than I can cope with downloading. I know it’s such a fine line as to be pretty much non-existent, but it helps me sleep at night.)

Meme Monday: Book Excerpt Meme

Filed under: Books, Memes — liberrydwarf @ 2:24 pm

Book meme (from here amongst other places)
– Grab the nearest book.
– Open it to page 56.
– Find the fifth sentence.
– Post the text of the sentence in your blog along with these instructions.

“Baptiste must have answered him satisfactorily, for he nodded, then dismissed them with a curt word and a gesture of his head”.

– “Beasts of Burden”, Wild Cards vol.IV “Aces Abroad”, edited by George R.R. Martin.

I’m giving the Wild Cards volumes I hadn’t tried before a read – perhaps spurred on by recently watching “Heroes” and missing season 1 when it was novel and cool. Wild Cards seems to retain that feeling without getting too tired – I think maybe because so many different writers are involved?

Anyway, in “Aces Abroad”, a delegation of the American Aces and Jokers already established in the earlier books are travelling to other countries in search of Ace and Joker experiences there. In this story, “Beasts of Burden”, they’ve gone to Haiti where a mysterious evil Joker has kidnapped some of the group to make them his slaves…

Meme Monday – “I see dead people” meme

Filed under: Memes, Uncategorized — liberrydwarf @ 10:41 am

That’s what it’s called, strangely enough. Kalafudra did it a couple of weeks ago…

1. You can travel anywhere in the world; one destination per day from Friday through Monday. Where do you go and why?
Friday: Rome
Saturday: Paris
Sunday: Istanbul
Monday: Disneyland

(There was nothing that said it had to be realistic…)

2. Would you keep a secret from the closest person to you if you thought it was in their best interest?

No – in no small part due to the fact that I’m dreadful at keeping secrets.

3. Tell me one odd/interesting fact about you that you have not revealed in some other crazy meme.

I went to five different primary (elementary) schools in 7 years… (don’t think I’ve revealed that elsewhere…)

4. You can have three wishes (for yourself, so forget all the ‘world peace etc’ BS) – what are they?

Better muscle tone and fitness, a perfectly healthy and extremely intelligent baby, and enough money for a bigger house complete with house cleaner…

5. If you could change anything about your living situation, would you?

I would like it far less cluttered. That’s about it.

6. Who is your favorite character from a comic strip? Please post one strip for us to laugh at.

I love Cat from “Cat and Girl

7. Now we have found you dead. What five people do you want to MEET in Heaven?

Presumably they’re to be people I never met before – Shakespeare, Admiral Lord Nelson, Gandhi, Augustus Caesar, and my paternal grandfather. This is, of course, assuming they all went in that direction and not Downstairs…

8. So since you are dead, what will the title of your life story be?

“A Dream of Libraries” – at this stage I think it sums me up professionally, and personally through my habits/hobbies. Of course, that’ll probably all change in a matter of weeks.

9. Word association time! What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you see the word pleasure?

A nice long nap in cool soft sheets…

Meme Monday – TV Meme

Filed under: Memes, TV — liberrydwarf @ 9:15 pm

(Taken from here)

1. Earliest remembered television?

I’ve got a awful memory as far as childhood goes – I do remember watching PlaySchool in my kindy class at about 4 years old, just not the specifics of any given episode

2. TV series you would want on a desert island

If there was no fast-approaching hope of rescue, probably Stargate, as ten seasons would probably last me a fair while 🙂

3. TV that made you laugh

The last thing that made me genuinely laugh, to the point of tears and practically wetting myself, was Community. Fantastic comedy, very good fun.

4. TV that made you cry

I remember crying in the Angel finale. I don’t tend to cry at sad TV because invariably my husband does, and someone’s got to keep it together and remind him that it’s just TV, honey, it doesn’t matter… 🙂

5. TV crap that you enjoy

I’m not a huge fan of mindless crap, to be honest. (And isn’t crap in the eye of the beholder?) Most TV I watch is on DVD, and they don’t tend to put the mindless crap on DVD…

6. TV you’ll never forget.

I doubt most of what happened in Spartacus: Blood and Sand will be leaving my brain any time soon (though probably not for great reasons…)

7. Favourite TV adaptation.

Hands down, gotta be Pride and Prejudice. No contest.

Need I say more?

7. Favourite nerdish program

There are far, far too many to name. Pretty much everything I watch is nerdish…

8. One TV program you are currently watching

Finishing off Heroes. Season 4 is pretty godawful… we just need closure.

9. One TV show/series you have been meaning to watch

Dexter. Now I have the first 3 books I’m happy to read those and then watch the series, didn’t want to do it the other way around…

Meme Monday: Book Meme

Filed under: Books, Memes — liberrydwarf @ 5:50 pm

(from kalafudra as usual)

The book that’s been on your shelves the longest.

My books don’t usually have a long shelf-life, constant turnover… I think we took some of the Willard Price Adventure books I used to read when I was about 10 years old when we helped my mother move, if you don’t count the intermission it would be them.

A book that reminds you of something specific in your life (a person, a place, a time).

I remember reading The Illuminatus Trilogy the year (well, four or five months) I lived with my father. I remember feeling really uncomfortable about it, because he absolutely loved it and wanted to discuss every plot detail, and I just thought it was weird and wasn’t really into it.

A book you acquired in some interesting way.

I bought my copy of Dragons of Autumn Twilight from a tiny English Language second-hand bookstore in Athens which was so much like I later discovered Black Books to be that it’s quite uncanny.

The book that’s been with you to the most places.

I’m not entirely sure that it’s the same copy, but I have taken The Complete Sherlock Holmes with me to the UK and to more than one local/interstate beach holiday.

The most recent addition to your shelves.

I think it was Midnight Louie’s Pet Detectives anthology.

Your current read, your last read and the book you’ll read next.

Last =Plum Lovin’ by Janet Evanovich

Current =The City Who Fought by Anne McCaffrey & S.M. Stirling

Next =Monsters from the Id by Anthony L Abraham

All from BookMooch mooches, which usually dictate my reading patterns. I read quite quickly, so this doesn’t seem to inconvenience anyone too much.

Monday Meme: Sleepy Meme

Filed under: Memes — liberrydwarf @ 9:19 am

[taken from here]

How do you relax?

Varying degrees of relaxation would include DVDs on the couch, on the bed with a book (though that’s less relaxing since I lost the ability to lie on my stomach) or a hot bath. Cat cuddles are relaxing in small doses if the cat isn’t too unwilling.

What do you sleep in?

It’s summer here at the moment, so usually a spaghetti-straps nightdress. Lately, one of stretchy fabric, the stretchier the better.

What kind of pillow do you like?

I have one quite full pillow for my head, and at the moment have a body pillow for elbows, knees and belly. And cat, most nights.

Do you sew in bed? Read? Watch tv? Eat?

I read in bed. And sometimes have breakfast in bed. I make a point of not using my laptop in bed, and we have no bedroom TV. I don’t sew at all, in bed or out (I am distinctly unladylike.)

Early to bed or all-nighter?

Probably later than I should, given a 6am wakeup time…

When you were young did you sleep with a stuffed animal?

Many. I still have a lot of them, even if they don’t have pride of place in the bedroom anymore. They’re all ratty and I’ve no plans to give them to my children, but even just thinking of disposing of them makes me a bit teary.

Who would you most like to have a pillow fight with?

For “naughty” pillow fights -Richard Armitage, in full North And South Mr Thornton period costume. Never tell my husband.

For “extreme warfare fun” pillow fights – I’d have to say an orangutan. Long crazy arms and particularly ticklish. Winner.

Meme Monday: Superhero Meme

Filed under: Comics, Memes, movies, TV — liberrydwarf @ 11:39 am

Taken from kalafudra.
And like her, these are my personal favourites, rather than who I think would win a fight. Because I am not nerd enough for the latter challenge, not by half.

With the caveat – most of my superhero experience would be from TV or Movie incarnations of said heroes, never went in for print comics much

Male Against Male

1. Conan or Superman?
Superman. Purely by exposure. Though once Jason Momoa’s Conan comes out I may be a changed woman. (Or at least a very drooly one.)

2. Spiderman or Silver Surfer?
Cartoon version Silver Surfer. Not from the Fantastic 4 movie. The live-action movies were not as cool as the cartoons ever were, and the second movie particularly so.

3. Captain America or Batman?
Batman. Don’t think I’ve ever come across Captain America before.

4. Wolverine or Cyclops?
Wolverine. I’m nothing if not a patriot. Please pass this message on to Hugh Jackman so he can send his (preferably shirtless) thanks.

5. Daredevil or The Phantom?
Ugh – hard work. Awful Ben Affleck or Awful Billy Zane? It’s like picking a dish off an offal menu when you can’t stand offal but you have to eat something… I’m going to go Phantom, because I’ve probably seen that movie once more than Daredevil.

6. Hellboy or Hulk?
Hellboy. The Hulk has just had too many incarnations recently, spoils it a bit.

7. The Flash or Green Lantern?
Haven’t really had much experience of either…

8. The Punisher or Blade?
Blade – guilty pleasure. Even Blade III *hangs head in shame*

9. Zorro or Thor?
Zorro. 100%. There’s something physiologically wrong with anyone who could pass on Banderas…

10. Blade or Spawn?
Blade again. They should probably have had someone else unique here?

Female Against Female

1. Batgirl or Supergirl?
Batgirl. I mean come on, she’s a librarian. Who else was I going to pick?

2. Elektra or Catwoman?
Catwoman. I was always Catwoman when I played Batman with my friends in grade 1. Happy memories.

3. Wonder Woman or Phoenix?
Wonder Woman – never heard of Phoenix

4. She-Hulk or She-Ra?
*sings* She-Ra! Princess of Power! (Admittedly, I wasn’t aware there even was a She-Hulk…)

5. Ultra-Violet or Wildstorm?
I’ve never heard of either of these superheroes…

6. Wonder Woman or Elektra?
Again, hard choice. Megan Fox (who I can’t stand) in a role I haven’t seen, or Jennifer Garner (who I love) in a terrible role? I’m going Elektra purely out of Garner loyalty, and I’ll just have to cringe later…

7. Leeloo or Buffy?
Why are these two even paired together – they’re absolutely nothing alike for comparison! I’m going with Leeloo, because unlike Buffy she never did anything that remotely annoyed me, and Buffy was on the odd occasion maddening as hell.

8. Queen of Swords or Xena?
Xena by default, as I have no idea who the Queen of Swords is.

9. Red Sonja or Nikita?
I assume Nikita = La Femme Nikita? I’ve never heard of Red Sonja before…

10. Storm or Wonder Woman?
Storm. And cartoon Storm, rather than Halle Berry Storm.

Female Against Male

1. Buffy or Blade?
I think Blade. Wesley Snipes’ one-liners are just too priceless to pass up.

2. She-Hulk or Hellboy?
Hellboy – but again, by default.

3. Red Sonja or Conan?
Conan – default again.

4. Supergirl or Superman?
Superman. Supergirl was kind of lame…

5. Xena or Spiderman?
Xena. I love the cheesiness…

6. UltraViolet or The Punisher?
Haven’t really come across either one…

7. Queen of Swords or Zorro?
Zorro – by default, true. But also because he’s awesome 🙂

8. Catwoman or Cyclops?
Catwoman. Cyclops is a whiny girl…

9. Nikita or Batman?
Batman. Batman would win pretty much any competition hands down though.

10. Phoenix or Silver Surfer?
Silver Surfer, by default.
