“The prospect of a long day at the beach makes me panic…”

“..There is no harder work I can think of than taking myself off to somewhere pleasant, where I am forced to stay for hours and ‘have fun’. ”

This was how we spent the long weekend – lovely! Thankyou Dog! Thankyou Main Beach, Gold Coast! Thankyou, vacuum cleaner for removing sand from car later!

Less covered in sand than a large beach-going labrador – but no less excited to see you – it’s this week’s links!

1) On the subject of cutesy animals having a good time: it’s LiberryCat! (No relation, I swear.) Though I guess if you’re plotting world domination, some heavy-duty research is probably a good place to start. Bet you Napoleon frequented the Reading Room too…

2) Aside from the beach, heavy-duty drinking is a crucial part of any Australian long weekend. In that light, may I present… The. Best. News. EVER!!!

3) Finally, Monday at Choir we were reminiscing (thanks in part to our accompanist who’s awesome at improv!) about our favourite old kids’ shows.

Does this look familiar, anyone?

“I feel bad that I don’t feel worse…”

Filed under: Alcohol, I.T, Librarian — liberrydwarf @ 8:44 am

I feel bad for bitching about the heat last week, considering how bad the bushfires are down south. Sorry! Minute’s silence for everyone who’s lost their home or worse, our thoughts are with them (if yours aren’t, shame on you!) . Let’s see if I can go a week without trivialising anything this time…

1) The good thing about drinking games is that – well, they’re games, and they’re drinking. The bad thing about drinking games is that you always forget the really good ones, mostly because they involve too much drinking. Fear not! Barmeister has their own Drinking Game wikipedia – so now as long as you can drink and Google (and you know you can, it’s one ability alcohol never affects. Just your search choices.) you’ll have a wealth of drinking games to enjoy. I highly recommend the TV/Movie category!

2) We all love a feel-good library story in my profession. And it don’t get much more feel-good than babies. Except for babies that are born in a library… I find the comments amusing. Sure, there are the usual “that’s lovely” inane ones. And there’s a heated debate over whether the mother was an illegal immigrant or just a welfare cheat (or both). But did anyone stop to think of the HEALTH RISK! If I haven’t convinced you by now, LIBRARIES ARE FILTHY, people!  (At least mine is.) The real Library Miracle here is that she didn’t get septic and die…

3) This is awesome! Would you wear a computer around? I know I would! (If it matched my shoes, at least…)

“I have noticed that the people who are late are often so much jollier than the people who have to wait for them.”

Oops, sorry, I’m late posting again! It’s been a hectic week- what with the special iPod project and rushing to finish season 4 of Stargate Atlantis, I (shamefully) let your serve of links for this week slide. Bad liberrydwarf!

So here they are, with a big side serve of apologies. We’ll spray them with water to make them look fresh, like McDonalds garden salad…

1) I love this story. All news stories should be like this. All science should be like this (though I don’t know that Time Magazine counts as science…) This is the answer to all my prayers! Sucks to be you, exercise bike, hand me that paperback!

2) Still in the world of science, sort of… this week I did something I haven’t done since I was 19 or so (not ages and ages ago, mind you,  but still a few years) and stayed out all night. Left at 6pm, got home at 6am. And while it was awesome (and I didn’t drink, I drove) I do think that maybe my task performance wasn’t great after a big night out. Probably would have been worse if I had been drinking. And that sort of thing could  really ruin my life… fortunately, Auntie Google will save me!

3) Finally, YoutTube this week comes from a colleague at work. We’re doing this “learn new web stuff” course, part of which is YouTube, and we’ve got an unofficial challenge going on to find the weirdest thing on there to share with the class. I don’t know if this would get my pick for weirdest, but it is a little crazy. All I can say is it’s great to be a fan, and the groom in question can’t argue he didn’t know what he was getting himself into three years from now…

Elections are won by men and women chiefly because most people vote against somebody rather than for somebody…

Hooray for politics! Actually, I think people who rock-star-idolise aging Aussie politicians are a bit pathetic, but I’m probably just bitter that I got hit on by grotty Young Liberals at the polling booth and didn’t manage to dislodge my smug local member. Anyways, with the election safely behind us, we can crawl out from under the bed where we’ve been curled up and whimpering the last six weeks, and enjoy some links…
1) Proving for us again that there really isn’t any purpose to the internet except laughing at rich and famous people, it’s the glorious gallery of celebrity photo madness that is “Men who look like old lesbians“. Featuring our very own dear new Fearless Leader (see Sunday, November 18, 2007). Sorry sir, your majesty…blame the Americans!

2) Dragging the Liberry back into some vague semblance of educational-ness… get a weekly dose of delightful trivia (and the accompanying news stories for all you “it is SO true, see here!” needs), it’s the BBC’s “Ten Things We Didn’t Know Last Week” blog…

3) Finally, this week’s YouTube vid is shamelessly Aussie – if you’re local you’ll probably break into a big grin within the first ten seconds! But I hope all you terrible foreigners like it too, it’s quite clever even if you don’t know the theme tune…
